You must have heard about how membership sites are a great way to monetize the internet. You create some videos… and charge for people to see them.
Well it’s not quite that easy.
In fact, the reason you’re reading this is because you realize there’s more to it, and you are asking yourself about “how to build a membership site” that will actually get people to pay to use it.
That’s why I decided to today’s blog post… so let’s get started.

So, let’s start off answering the question…
What Is A Membership Site
A membership site is a “gated” part of your website where only members who subscribe can access the content behind the “gates”. A “gate” is simply a barrier you build into your website using a plugin like MemberPress or OptimizePress.
Once you’ve got that barrier in place, you can have the membership either free, paid, or a combination of both. Then once they have the membership, members can log in and access the content.
The content I’m talking about can be a number of different things like:
- Online courses
Basically.. the content are electronic.
Plan Out The Membership Site
Take the time to plan out the membership site. A good membership site has different elements to it. Figure out the levels of access you want, and what the overall content structure and layout will ultimately be: create your rough blueprint.
In the video above, we also talked about the marketing funnel. This is probably the most overlooked aspect of a membership site. Without it, you’ll be hardpress to get any sales.
When planning out the marketing funnel, you need to plan out any upsells or downsells you’ll be offering in the membership site. You may decide to start off with a free membership (to collect emails) which allows only limited access. Then the member can pay more to unlock different areas of the membership site.
How Will You Charge For Access
What to charge for access will require thought:
- Will you want to charge a one time fee, or will you want a monthly fee?
- Do you want want lots of small products, or one large product with a higher ticket price?
Think about your product value ladder, and how you want to grow with your customer.
You Don’t Have To Have It All Done At Once
Don’t think you have to have the membership site completely done before you start marketing it. You may decide to offer a “founders” discount for those early adapters will to pay for access before the site it complete. You can also charge for access for each part as it’s completed.
Don’t think you have to get it 100% done… otherwise you may never get a chance to start monetizing your work. The membership site will probably constantly evolve for years after the launch date.
How To Get Membership
When you have the site finally built you need to think about how you’ll get traffic to the site and into the marketing funnel. While that’s outside the scope of this blog post, you should take a look at the following articles to see what methods of traffic generation you want to use:
and really the list can expand well beyond this.
You won’t be able to just expect the traffic will come once you’re site is built… you’ll have to deliberately drive traffic to the membership site.
