How to Determine a Target Audience for Your Blog or Online Content.

Be More Successful by Defining Your Audience Avatar

So you want to start an online business.

You already know that you want to create content like blog posts, video, or pod casts because they help get your message out, and attract your perfect customer.

And you even have an idea what the first few topics will be.

But who are you going to be talking to?

The better you understand your ideal audience, the faster your business will grow. Online content marketers often struggle to define their target market, or simply set their sights too broadly.

Your content and products might appeal to a large group of people, but it doesn’t make sense to try to market to everyone. If you market to everyone, you market to no one.

Forget trying to appeal to the masses.

Pick a target audience, or avatar, and focus on knowing who that target audience is.

Your avatar represents a whole group of people that you identified as target audience. When you communicate with your target audience, you always talk to your avatar. This means you always communicate in first person, like you are talking only to your avatar.  This way they feel more connected to you.

All the content you create online should be designed around your avatar.  Your content should speak directly to your avatar, which makes it the most valuable marketing tool for your online business.

Let’s Start Defining Your Audience Avatar

Who has Already Enjoyed Your Content?

If you are already creating content, get a feel for who your present audience. If you use differentiating links and setup Google Analytics, you should know if you are visitors are coming from Facebook, YouTube, etc., and some basic demographics.

You can also learn about your audience by conducting surveys. Or even look at your e-mail autoresponder statistics (often you can also find out the customer country when you look at the autoresponder member information).

Create Basic Demographics for Your Audience Avatar

When defining your target audience, start evaluating the basic information first such as their:

  • Age
  • Location
  • Gender
  • Income
  • Education
  • Occupation
  • Ethnicity
  • Marital Status
  • # of Children

By completing this list you will have a head start on defining your target audience.

Defining Your Audience Psychographics

Now let’s start thinking about the personality and psychographics of your target audience.  Psychographics are the personal characteristics of your audience, and they include:

  • Personality
  • Attitudes
  • The clothes worn
  • Values
  • Interests and hobbies
  • Lifestyles
  • Where they hang out
  • General behavior
  • Publications that they read

By this point you should have a pretty good idea who your target audience is, and what they like to do. You should know what they like to do on the weekends, where they vacation, where they shop, what they finances are like, where they like to get coffee, etc.

You should also have a very good idea what your avatar’s triggers are that will get their interest; what keeps them up at night, and what they are hungry to know more about.

And by now you should start feeling that your avatar is someone you know well… which leads to…

Give a Name to Your Avatar

Since you know the age range, gender and ethnicity of your target audience, do some research and determine what common names those people should have… and then pick one.

Name your avatar a common name that best personifies what you have already described.

For instance younger audiences may have names such as Ashley, Tyler, Brandon, or Megan. Your older audiences they may have names such as John, Betty, Donald, or Margaret.

Adding a name to your avatar makes it become even more real, helping you connect with it even better.

Defining Your Audience Is An Important, but Ongoing Process

Creating your avatar might feel a bit strange at the start but it’s actually a lot of fun.

They are like your marketing campaign buddies that you can turn to every time you are creating online content. Visualize yourself looking at your content from your audience avatar’s perspective and take into account what are their interests and triggers to get their emotionally involved in what you are creating.

So now that you know the secret to successful marketing, all you need to do is get thinking and spend couple of hours considering your avatar.

Keep the avatar in mind anytime you are communicating with your target audience, whether it be via ads, blog post, videos, social media…and you will notice it’s easier to talk to one person then a big group.

Don’t forget that you should keep revisiting your avatar’s description and tweak it as you learn more about who you are attracting to your content. Your avatar will evolve over time, and get more powerful.
