Different Kinds of Fear
In the video he makes the distinction between a fear that is holding us back and a fear that is dangerous to your health and well-being.
You don’t want to do something that will cause danger to your life or be too risky like walk out in traffic or get in a cage with a gorilla or just quit your job without a plan. That’s not what he is talking about with this list.
He’s talking more about the kinds of fears that would empower us and cause us to grow but have a chance of bruising our ego.
We all have an ego and it is a necessary part of our lives, but it can hold us back partly because our ego has a fear of failure and what other people might think of us.
As long as we are alive and human we have an ego trying to run the show. We just need to keep it in check.
We just need to keep it from running our life by letting the ego know we are going to do things that we are scared of and it could possibly make our ego uncomfortable.
With the help of a supportive environment and a way to be held accountable, you can use this powerful tool to develop new skills and greater self-confidence.
Your Fears Exercise
Before you make your list I suggest you do a little homework Don’t ever commit to anything on your list blindly. Weigh out the risk, be prepared to follow through and then go for it.
Here is my list of 20
- Speak from stages of thousands of people
- Go to a restaurant alone
- Approach a stranger and ask for….
- Travel to Rio
- Write a book
- Take a vacation by myself or with a girlfriend
- Make cold sales call
- Interview Frank Kern or Tony Robbins
- Test drive a Bugatti
- Talk to strangers at a party
- Volunteer to get on stage at an event
- Sit in the front row
- Tell a joke to a group of people
- Work as a caricature artist at Kings Island
- Post pictures and personal thoughts and video on my Facebook personal page
- Bungee jump
- Run another marathon
- do my own taxes
- sing karaoke
- Spend time in a sensory deprivation chamber
It will be uncomfortable but overcoming your fears is the way to achieve personal growth in life
It will lead to:
- Unforeseen opportunities
- New skills
- New connections
- Greater self-confidence
- Internal growth
If you don’t try, you’ll never know what you’re capable of. Besides, when you think about it, Haven’t your most satisfying accomplishments been on the other side of your comfort zone?
