How to Optimize Your Website Structure For SEO

Are you looking to improve your site rankings in search engines like Google?

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is not like it used to be.  You can optimize your page so Google knows what it is all about, but that’s not enough.  Often you have to do backlinking and then optimize your website structure for SEO.

That’s why I want to talk to you about your website structure for SEO optimization.

Optimizing Your Website Structure For SEO

The following video goes over how to optimize your website structure for SEO.

VIDEO: Website Structure For SEO

Let’s talk about this in more detail.

Let’s Begin Mapping This Out

When you are ready to optimize your website structure for SEO, I recommend that you get out the trusted piece of paper and pencil and start there.

On the far left, draw a short horizontal line to represent your main website.  Label it “Home”.

Then draw a vertical line (like I did in the video), followed by horizontal lines to represent the main menu options.  Label each of these new horizontal lines to match your menu (or at least your new proposal menu structure).  At the time of writing this, the menu structure for www.mikemarko.com is as follows:

  • Blog
  • About Us
  • Work With Us
  • Product & Resources

Now don’t get stuck on the menu options you have (or even what I have).  This exercise may cause you to change that structure.

SIDE NOTE: I only have very few menu options on purpose.  I cover why in detail in the blog post, Top Nine Tips For An Effective Website Design.

Keep Building

Now add in other elements of your structure.  You don’t have to fill out the structure for “Blog” because it represents all the blog posts.

But “About Us” could be connected to the “Contact Us” page.  You may even have a “History” page that would go under this as well.

Map out the same thing for other menu pages.

If you have a “Products & Resources” page similar to mine then naturally it has a lot more going on.  Include product reviews, etc, that will could be referenced by this page.

Now Link Them Back

Now continuing from our example above, the “About Us” page will reference the “Contact Us” and “History” page, and whatever you made for that branch (or silo) of the website.  Next go into the “Contact Us” and “History” pages and make sure they reference (and link to) the “Contact Us” page.

These links should use appropriate, and yet naturally reading, anchor text.

The “Products & Resources” page will do the same thing… but will be even more complicated.

See why I wanted you to map this all out first?  🙂

Build It Deeper

Now this can go much deeper than I showed in my video.  In fact, a really good ranking site may go 3, 4, or even 5 pages deep.  This may not happen on day one, but as you keep building your site and adding content keep updating your plan.

Say I wrote a HUGE webpage on SEO… this could even be a blog post.  Maybe I wrote it to be 5,000+ word long… a true pillar post.  Since it is so monumental I would want to include this page in my website structure for SEO.

How would I do that?

Well I could take all the product reviews on SEO related tools and training, which go to the “Product & Resources” page, and also link them to this SEO pillar post.  Then this SEO pillar post would also references the same product review pages (since this is probably a comprehensive SEO page) and also smaller blog posts.  These smaller blog posts should also reference the SEO pillar post (as well as other SEO blog posts).

You can see that this can get pretty complicated.  That’s why it is important to keep your map up to date with your key webpages.

Nothing Is Written In Stone

Remember, your website is very fluid… it can change relatively easy.  If you do create a key webpage that you never anticipated, you can always go back and figure how it fits into your plan.  Then visit each of the other key pages in that “silo” and make sure that they all reference that new page as needed (and as shown in the updated website structure for SEO).

Keep revisiting the plan, and update accordingly.

Final Thoughts On Optimizing Your Website Structure For SEO

We just covered how you can start optimizing your website for SEO.  When you take the time to do this properly, it will really help you rank your pages easier in the search engines.  If you are serious about ranking your content, this is something you should start implementing TODAY.

This and other strategies will help you get traffic to your website, and thus leads.  And in my opinion the main reason to have a website is to get leads.  But no matter the reason you have to build an online presence with a blog, I recommend you use the exact same blogging and marketing platform I use.

Happy Blogging!
